Thought Leadership with Mitchell Levy and Michael Procopio, Episode 41: September 24, 2014

Thought Leadership with Mitchell and MichaelIn this episode of Thought Leadership with Mitchell and Michael (#TLL) we interview

Our guest this week was Axel Schultze (@AxelS).

2014 Founder & CEO Society3, Startup and Business Accelerator with focus on helping startups getting more traction, growing user base and gaining market validation. General Partner in Society3 Ventures founded summer 2014.

Axel Schultze2012 Developing social media management tools. User base grew quickly to 1.8 Million and became the foundation technology for Society3

2008 Founder & CEO of Social Media Academy, self funded, educating in aggregate over 5,000 attendees from 28 countries and team mates from corporations including Avaya, Dell, Oracle, SAP. Largest Social Media education provider in the world.

In this episode, Mitchell and Michael share insights with #ThoughtLeader Axel Schultze about the topic democratization of influence. Axel, who is the founder of business accelerator Society3 and the founder and CEO of Social Media Academy, believes #ThoughtLeadership happens when companies, specifically the leadership bench, communicate what really matters to them and gain influence for doing so. In defining democratization of influence, Axel says that theoretically, anybody can gain influence, given the tools and channels we have today, can become publishers. Experts and #ThoughtLeaders could be more influential by communicating their expertise to the world. The discussion also touches on the need for social media guidelines for company employees and even the management to be guided in communicating to customers through social media. A social media guideline will become more effective and powerful if it is done with the team. Axel also notes that this is different from social media monitoring and cites an example where a company manager pointed out they do not need to monitor what employees are saying on social media just as they don’t monitor what they are saying to customers who walk into the store every day.

One question about democratization of influence is whether the leadership is really engaging on social media, to which Axel notes that the leadership team has a very important role in embracing #ThoughtLeadership and in embracing democratization of influence. Axel also emphasizes mid-level companies, those with 100 to 500 employees, can gain influence by using the team, and the employee base, very efficiently to communicate to the market. It is all for free, and the only thing you need to invest is time. So spend 30 minutes online to communicate with the ecosystem and that will go a long way.

FIR Presents Inside PR 385: Twitter “Buy Now” and Social Advertising

FIR Presents Inside PRTwitter is slowly rolling out a “buy now” button to users, which promotes the ability to buy directly from the social network.

As Twitter continues to try to figure out how to make money, and brands want to figure out a return-on-investment that translates directly to the bottom line, it will be interesting to watch and see how (or if?) this works.

Pinterest certainly has been able to figure it out…maybe Twitter is taking a page from their book.

We discuss the implications and pros and cons of social advertising and then move to Apple Pay.

Apple Pay is offered on the new iPhone 6 and provides a way for you to pay without cash or credit card (and is my dream because I hate carrying a wallet and I hate carrying a purse).

We debate the merits, whether it’s bad for small business, whether it could be disastrous for some, and whether it’s made only for enterprise organizations.

Martin tells a story of his local coffee shop—Snakes and Lattes—that is a true neighborhood destination. He worries a business like that won’t be able to afford the infrastructure needed to accept Apple Pay. I, however, share a story of how local boutiques in my neighborhood all have iPads at the counter to accept Belly, a local loyalty card.

Who is right and who is wrong is yet to be seen, but we’d love to hear what you think.

Will the Twitter “buy now” button help brands increase sales? Will Apple Pay be devastating to small business?

Media Bullseye Roundtable

In this episode of the Roundtable, I’m joined by Sarah Santucci of SMS Strategies to discuss three topics:

—The role of communications in improving turnout in elections, spurred by some observations made by FIR Podcast Network co-founder Neville Hobson.

—The importance of being a communicator first and a technologist second, as argued by frequent Roundtable guest co-host Mark Story.

—Advice on starting out as a freelancer or PR agency founder, through the eyes of Gini Dietrich.

FIR B2B #16: How ANSYS Turned More Than 100 Tech Experts Into Bloggers

Paul anchors the podcast solo this week. In this episode:

News & Trends

An EMarketer study  finds that B2B content marketing efforts are overly focused on lead generation at the expense of thought leadership. It’s a good point. Content marketing is rarely as effective at the lower reaches of the funnel as it is in the early stages. You can measure ROI even at the top of the funnel, but you have to know the lifetime value of your customer.

The Buyer Persona Blog cites a recent study by the Information Technology Services Marketing Association that found that 44% of marketers think buyer personas are important but only 15% think they use them effectively. It underlies the point that buyers aren’t demographic statistics; they’re people. If you aren’t in contact with them, you can create profiles but not personas.

A new study from PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) indicates that most senior executives still rely more on intuition than data when making big decisions. This echoes another survey earlier this year that found that 61% of US business decision-makers believe that human insights should precede hard analytics when making decisions. This is another argument for getting to know your customers as people. Data is only one part of the decision-making picture.

A post on the Marketing Craftsmanship blog cites research that illustrate the new reality that buyers research decisions exhaustively before contacting a sales person. Content marketing is supposed to address this problem, but it doesn’t work if you just use it to blast marketing messages. Less is more. Listen and respond.

Special Guest: Sandy Adam

Sandy Adam is Social Media Marketing Manager at ANSYS, a maker of sophisticated modeling software, and a big fan of social media marketing. When she arrived at ANSYS, the company’s blog was lightly trafficked. A survey showed that customers wanted more technical information. By enlisting subject matter experts (SMEs) as contributors, celebrating their successes and providing support and editing, Sandy has succeeded in making the blog the source of nearly half of the traffic to the ANSYS website. More than 100 SMEs have contributed.
